The Lowline: Der erste unterirdische Park der Welt

Eine U-Bahn-Station mit Tageslicht, ist das denn möglich? Das Projekt „The Lowline“ eröffnet 2021 den weltweit ersten unterirdischen Park.

New York City versteht sich nicht umsonst als Weltmetropole: Hochhäuser, luxuriöse Bauten und architektonische Verspieltheiten. Für Touristinnen und Touristen mag dies gerade seinen besonderen Reiz haben, für die dort lebenden Menschen kann der viele Beton aber auch oft sehr trist und eng werden.

The Lowline bietet Abwechslung zum urbanen Raum

Die Vision von The Lowline ist es das Leben der New Yorkerinnen und New Yorker durch mehr Grünflächen zu verbessern und dabei gleichzeitig ein historisches Element der Stadt zurück in den kulturellen Mittelpunkt zu rücken. Durch innovative Solartechnologie soll ein historischer Trolleyterminal im Stadteil Lower East Side beleuchtet werden – so entsteht ein unterirdischer Park, der eine wunderschöne Abwechslung zum urbanen Raum bietet.

Der frühere NASA-Mitarbeiter James Ramsey hat für das Projekt eine völlig neue Technologie entwickelt, die auch zeigt, wie sich Städte im 21. Jahrhundert verändern können. Auf den Dächern von umliegenden Gebäuden werden Fenster angebracht, welche die Sonnenstrahlen einfangen. Die Photonen werden von einem Bodenkollektor reflektiert und durch eine spezielle Röhre an die Distributoren weitergeleitet. Von dort aus kann das Licht punktgenau auf den Boden strahlen, wodurch es sogar möglich wird Bäume und Pflanzen wachsen zu lassen.

Unterirdische Grünfläche im Lowline-Park

Im Lowline-Park, welcher seinen Namen als Gegenpol zum berühmten High Line-Park erhielt, entsteht somit die weltweit erste unterirdische Grünfläche. Als Besucherin oder Besucher findet man sich in einer Lichtatmosphäre wieder, als würde man im Meer tauchen und beim Blick nach oben die Sonnenstrahlen durchblitzen sehen.

Laut den United Nations leben derzeit 54% der Weltbevölkerung in Städten, im Jahr 2050 werden es bereits 66% sein. Für Daniel Barasch, Mitbegründer von The Lowline, liegt genau darin die Aufgabe von Jungdesignerinnen und -designern im urbanen Raum. „Wenn wir hinausgehen und den Leuten von unserem Projekt erzählen, dann ist das Inspirierende an unserer Idee vor allem das Potenzial, das Leben der Menschen zu verbessern.“, so Barasch.

Finanziert wurde das Projekt seit der Veröffentlichung im Jahr 2012 vorwiegend über Kickstarter-Investitionen und Sponsorengelder. Zusätzlich zur Planung des Parks wurde ein Labor eröffnet, wo Freiwillige aus der Nachbarschaft mitarbeiten können sowie Kindern auf eine faszinierende Weise Zugang zur Wissenschaft geboten wird.

Bis zur Eröffnung dauert es noch ein paar Jahre. Wir von LIFECHANGE sind aber schon jetzt gespannt und hoffen auf ein ähnliches Projekt bei uns in Wien!
