Die weltweit ersten 100-prozentigen Wasserstoff-Personenzüge fahren jetzt in Deutschland

Während Dieselzüge, die nach wie vor auf vielen Strecken im Einsatz sind und ihren Teil zur Verschmutzung beitragen, geben diese reinen Wasserstoffzüge nur Wasserdampf ab.*

In Brennstoffzellen verbindet sich auf dem Dach des Zuges gespeicherter Wasserstoff mit Sauerstoff zu Strom. Der Prozess emittiert nur Wasserdampf. „Es ist weniger laut“, so Bruno Marguet von Alstom, dem in Frankreich ansässigen Unternehmen, das die Züge für die LNVG, die deutsche regionale Eisenbahngesellschaft, entwickelt und gebaut hat. „Es gibt keine gesundheitsschädlichen Emissionen.“

Derzeit wird ein Teil des Wasserstoffs, der die Strecke versorgt, aus fossilen Brennstoffen hergestellt, aber der Zugbetreiber plant, mit Partnern zusammenzuarbeiten, um den Wasserstoff stattdessen mit lokaler Windkraft zu produzieren.

Wasserstoffzüge fahren weiter

Rund die Hälfte der Bahnstrecken in Europa sind elektrifiziert und können daher von elektrischen Zügen genutzt werden. Aber auf Strecken, die nicht so oft befahren werden, kann die Aufrüstung mit elektrischen Oberleitungen zu teuer sein. Wasserstoffzüge können außerdem weiter fahren als ein batterieelektrischer Zug mit einer Ladung, bevor sie wieder aufgetankt werden müssen. Die Züge von Alstom legen rund 1.000 Kilometer zurück, bevor die Wasserstofftanks wieder aufgefüllt werden müssen. Auf der Regionalstrecke der LNVG zwischen kleineren Städten können die Züge den ganzen Tag ohne Nachtanken fahren.

Die Sprecherin der LNVG sagt gegenüber der Deutschen Welle (DW): „Wir werden keine Dieselzüge mehr kaufen, um noch mehr für den Klimaschutz zu tun. Wir sind [auch] davon überzeugt, dass Dieselzüge in Zukunft nicht mehr wirtschaftlich sein werden.“ Züge sind bereits eine kohlenstoffärmere Wahl für Reisen als Fliegen, aber wie jede andere Branche müssen sich Bahnunternehmen von fossilen Brennstoffen verabschieden, um die globalen Klimaziele zu erreichen.

Die neue Strecke zwischen den Städten Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde und Buxtehude ist die erste weltweit, die vollständig mit Wasserstoff betrieben wird. (Alstom ist auch das erste Unternehmen, das diesen Zugtyp herstellt, obwohl Siemens Anfang dieses Jahres einen Prototyp eines Wasserstoffzugs getestet hat und plant, ihn bis 2024 auf den Markt zu bringen.) Die LNVG-Linie betreibt derzeit fünf der neuen Züge. Mit dem Auslaufen der Dieselzüge werden bald neun weitere hinzukommen.

Alstom baut auch Wasserstoffzüge für eine weitere Linie in Deutschland, zusammen mit anderen in Italien und Frankreich. Das Unternehmen befindet sich auch in Gesprächen, um möglicherweise einige der Züge nach Nordamerika zu bringen. Die Herausforderungen für die Umsetzung sind meist nicht technologischer, sondern politischer Natur.
